Stainless Steel 409 Pipes are ferritic stainless steel pipes made up of iron, chromium (10.5–11.75%), and minor percentages of carbon, silicon, manganese, nitrogen, and in some cases, titanium for stabilization. The lower percentage of carbon increases weldability and minimizes the risk of intergranular corrosion. Pipes have moderate mechanical properties with tensile strength ranging between 380–450 MPa and yield strength ranging about 170–240 MPa based on the heat treatment. They show satisfactory oxidation resistance at high temperatures and structural integrity against thermal cycling and are suitable for automotive and heat-intensive use. SS 409 is the trade-off between strength, cost, and corrosion resistance.
