SAE 1020 Tubing is low-carbon steel with around 0.18–0.23% carbon, 0.30–0.60% manganese, and negligible amounts of phosphorus and sulfur. Its plain composition provides excellent weldability and machinability without sacrificing moderate strength. It has tensile strength of 410–550 MPa, yield strength of about 250 MPa, and elongation of around 15–30% based on the condition. It possesses good ductility and impact resistance under both hot and cold working conditions. SAE 1020 tubing may also be carburized for surface hardness to be used for parts where wear resistance is needed with a tough core.
